Vinnitsa medical university was created in 1921. At the University work more than 500 teachers, including 90 doctors of science, professors, and 340 candidates of science.

The University has also trained more than 6,5 thousand doctors from 93 countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, who have received the University " Doctor of Medicine" diploma. They render medical aid to the population of their countries, work in higher educational medical establishments, head state, and private medical establishments.

The predecessors of VNMU were Vinnitsa Pharmaceutical Institute (1921-1936), Vinnitsa branch of All-Ukrainian Institute of extra-mural medical education (1930), subsequently (1932) reorganized in the Evening industrial medical institute with two faculties - medical-preventive and pediatric.

Vinnitsa Medical Institute was created in 1934 on the basis of the Evening industrial medical institute. In 1960 by the Decree of Presidium of the Supreme Body of USSR the institute was given the name of N.I. Pirogov. In 1984 the institute was awarded the order "Budge of Honour" for success in training doctors and teaching staff, rendering assistance to practical public health services.

In 1994 Vinnitsa medical institute was accredited on IV (the highest) level, and its status was changed to university (Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 408, dated 15.06.94). From that time the institute was named Vinnitsa State Pirogov Memorial Medical University.
